Numerous idyllic and clearly marked hiking paths await all those who want to make their way to the top of the Schafberg on foot. After completing a vertical gain of over 1000 m, a ride back down to the valley on the SchafbergBahn cog railway awaits as a well-earned reward.
From St. Wolfgang via the Dorneralm to the top of the Schafberg at 1783 m above sea level. An easy summit tour with marvelous, continuously changing views during the hike up, surpassed only by the astonishing panoramic view from the summit.
From the church in St. Wolfgang, you will hike along the Sternallee past the Försterhof, before making a right on the path leading to the Aschinger inn. Continue on this wide path up through the forest as far as the Dorneralm (1.5 hours) and the Schafbergalm (station for the cog railway). From here, trail number 20 leads you steeply uphill across completely open terrain (crossing the train tracks twice) until you come to the so-called “Krapfl”. This is where your final climb to the summit begins. Afterwards, enjoy a pleasant ride back down to the valley on the SchafbergBahn.
This hike is secured by safety cables in parts and is very exposed, only recommended for very surefooted mountaineers with a head for heights. Good alpine equipment is also essential.
From the church in St. Wolfgang, you will briefly head west, then make a right uphill in the direction of the Kalvarienberg. Path No. 25 takes you past farmhouses, then through forest to the Auerriesenalm, elev. 971 m. Continue on a narrow hiking path through the forest, which will eventually bring you to the Mönichsee at roughly 1300 m above sea level, surrounded by ancient forests. There, keep left until the trail divides. Keeping left yet again, this is the start of the Purtschellersteig trail, which initially crosses a very steep mountainside, then a very steep rock face (with safety cables) leading to a cave entrance. Immediately after this, the trail divides; left takes you on a flat hike to the Schafbergalm, right a steep climb to the summit of the Schafberg.
A less challenging mountain hike, though sturdy hiking shoes are required. Refreshments available on the summit.
From the church in St. Gilgen north along the Mondseer Strasse to the main road. You will cross this, briefly go up and then downhill, cross the road again, coming to the small village of Winkl, where you will take a right down a narrow road leading to Gasthaus Waldschenke. From there, the path makes its way through forest and a series of switchbacks up to the Schafbergalm, 1364 m (mid-station of the cog railway). Here, you will first continue uphill across meadows, then cross the train tracks, followed by several steps that bring you to the so-called “Krapfl” and from there on a gentle climb to the summit.
