There is so much to see... Has Lake Wolfgangsee been on your “to do” list for quite a while? In that case, it’s high time to pay a visit to this jewel of the Salzkammergut.

A perfect Day on Lake Wolfgangsee

The emerald-green Lake Wolfgangsee has so many unforgettable highlights in store for its guests. And there is perhaps no more beautiful way to experience the atmosphere of Wolfgangsee than by sailing on the WolfgangseeSchifffahrt ferries. Each of the three charming lakeside villages is best reached by water. Afterwards, a ride on Austria's steepest cog railway is the icing on the cake.

The villages around the Lake

ST. WOLFGANG

St. Wolfgang is home to an impressive parish church, with a winged altar by Michael Pacher that is certain to take your breath away. Likewise, the world-famous operetta "Im Weissen Rössl am Wolfgangsee" (known in English as “The White Horse Inn”) has been drawing fans to this picturesque community since the 20th century.

ST. GILGEN

St. Gilgen am Wolfgangsee has close ties to musical genius Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and his family. Not least because his mother was born in St. Gilgen and Mozart’s sister “Nannerl” would eventually settled down here as well. A number of events celebrate the Mozart family to this day. Incidentally: The picturesque village of St. Gilgen is located barely 30 km from the historic district of Salzburg City.

STROBL

The third village on this lake is Strobl, enchanting visitors from around the world with its magical lakeshore promenade.

Mountain World surrounding Lake Wolfgangsee

SCHAFBERG

Avid summiteers are also guaranteed to find what they’re looking for on Wolfgangsee, with a mountain world that includes probably the most beautiful scenic mountain in all of Austria – the 1783 m high Schafberg.

The SchafbergBahn, Austria’s steepest cog railway, carries visitors to the top in roughly 35 minutes. Once there, delightful hiking paths and refreshment opportunities invite you to linger and relish every moment. The breathtaking scenery makes this excursion unforgettable. But don’t just take our word for it. Come see for yourself!

For those who want to climb the Schafberg by foot, numerous idyllic and marked hiking trails are available. After the climb, in which over 1,000 vertical meters are to overcome, a descent on the SchafbergBahn cog railway is the ideal reward.
