When the first MönchsbergAufzug lift went into operation, it provided seating for eight and standing room for four people. The iron construction was mounted on the rocky exterior of the Mönchsberg.
In the course of remodeling Grand Café Winkler, a lift was constructed inside the mountain. At that time, there were only three lift cabins, each carrying eight passengers. In 1977, the casino at Café Winkler opened for business.
Due to the steadily growing numbers of visitors, the lift was modernized in 1987. After the mountain and valley stations were completely remodeled in 2003, the lifts went back into operation again.
